Strengths • Strong offensive rebounder • Solid lower body, gets good position on the blocks. • Extremely active, battles for loose balls and rebounds • Quick post moves Weaknesses • Forces too many bad shots • Awful free throw shooter • Needs to improve court vision/passing out of post Defense Strengths • Excellent rebounder • Physical post defender • Good help defender Weaknesses • Not a great athlete, can be beat of the dribble • Prone to silly fouls Analysis Pope was a much-heralded transfer from New Mexico State and at times lived up to the hype. His primary strength is his rebounding on both ends of the floor. While not a great athlete, he hustles after the ball and doesn’t give up on plays. He has a wide base and he uses it well. Offensively, he has the beginnings of a decent move-set and a quick first step to the basket. Defensively, he uses his body well in the post and he boxes out strongly, though he is prone to silly fouls – usually from trying to block shots, which is not a great strength of his. Towards the end of the season, the attitude issues which had dogged him earlier in his career seemed to come back, including an ejection in a NIT game for groin punches. He can be an effective bench player in the NBA, but he needs to get the chip off his shoulder. - Ed Isaacson |
