Round 1

Skip To Round:  1  •  2  •  3  •  4  •  5  •  6  •  7  •  Undrafted
1 Toronto Auston Matthews C Zurich (NLA) 6' 2" 216
DraftSite's comments:Leafs finally get a big strong centre-forward with soft hands small space agility and a nose for the end.
2 Winnipeg Patrik Laine LW Tappara Tampere (SM-liiga) 6' 4" 201
DraftSite's comments:Winnipeg lucks out acquiring a dynamic, big shooting talent who can change games with his hands and playmaking.
3 Columbus Pierre-Luc Dubois C Cape Breton (QMJHL) 6' 2" 200
DraftSite's comments:Jarmo & company surprise all by taking three zone beast who is close to ready and one of the safer selections in the class.
4 Edmonton Jesse Puljujärvi RW Kärpät (SM-liiga) 6' 2.75" 196
DraftSite's comments:Edmonton gets the consolation prize of Puljujärvi, who had no problem scoring goals in the Finnish Elite league against men. He plays right away and will be responsible on the entire sheet. Not only can he beat you with good reads, outstanding body position, quick hands, long reach, and elite-heavy shot, he will hit top gear, make contact and leave defenders on their backsides.
5 Vancouver Olli Juolevi D London (OHL) 6' 2" 185
DraftSite's comments:Vancouver said all along they were looking at puck carrying defensemen. He may have some commitment issues in the battle areas, but he’s defensively aware and agility and puck movement, could with his high skill level and PP ability, he looks like a future NHL mailman.
6 Calgary Matthew Tkachuk LW London (OHL) 6' 2" 188
DraftSite's comments:The Flames, looking for a bigger guy to compliment their young core of scorers, get a high motored power wing with a ton of edge and competitiveness and considerable upside to be a dangerous NHL scorer.
7 Arizona Clayton Keller C US-Under-18 (USAH-NTDP) 5' 10" 165
DraftSite's comments:He gets it done with elite hockey smarts, quickness, super hands, creative playmaking and fearlessness.
8 Buffalo Alexander Nylander LW AIK (Allsvenskan) 6' 1" 178
DraftSite's comments:Nylander is a pure skill playmaking alternative with terrific instincts, and the ability to stick handle in a phone booth.
9 Montreal Mikhail Sergachyov D Windsor (OHL) 6' 2" 221
DraftSite's comments:This first year North American import has high end mobility, a heavy shot, puck skills, and strong active stick to go with the ability give back what he gets. Dangerous when he has the puck on his stick on the attack, and very cam and reliable when he has it in the other two zones.
10 Colorado Tyson Jost C Penticton (BCHL) 5' 11.5" 190
DraftSite's comments:He’s a tad under six foot, but plays with the passion and competitiveness of a big man. You draft him and you know that he can play both PK and PP, in any situation, and on any line or role. He can play as a set up and at centre but is your speedy natural goal scorer as a wing.
11 Ottawa Trade Icon Logan Brown C Windsor (OHL) 6' 6" 220
DraftSite's comments:Logan Brown is an answer to the Senator’s prayers for a big Jean Béliveau-type centre forward with soft hands and vision. They may need to light candle in hopes he continues to grow his offensive game and feet.
12 New Jersey Trade Icon Michael McLeod C Mississauga (OHL) 6' 2" 185
DraftSite's comments:He may project as a second liner, but don’t let him get a half step on and NHL defenseman, or he’s gone. He is a three zone player who never takes a shift off.
13 Carolina Jake Bean D Calgary Hitmen (WHL) 6' 0.75" 173
DraftSite's comments:He might be the best offensive dee-man attacker in the class. His edging and feet are elite, and has a high panic point as he waits and sees the openings and moves the puck to his best option. A terrific stick-handler and four direction skater who seems to have a little “letting” in him…
14 Boston Charles McAvoy D US-Under-18 (USAH-NTDP) 6' 0" 206
DraftSite's comments:His high water mark may be as a second pairing defender, but there is room for him get better all-around through the college route.
15 Minnesota Luke Kunin C Wisconsin 6' 0" 192
DraftSite's comments:A goal scorer who skates well balanced and with a nose for the net. High energy competitor who isn’t afraid to be all over the opposing defender on the forecheck with the plan to go to the net once he has gotten that puck from them.
16 Arizona Trade Icon Jacob Chychrun D Sarnia (OHL) 6' 2" 194
DraftSite's comments:When drafting a defensive prospect, you look for size, skating ability, puck skill, speed, and an excellent back pedal. He has these and exceptional physical tools, poise and a powerful point shot. His stock dropped some when there were question on some his DZ decisions, that’s why they call them prospects. He is as good as many forwards one on one on the attack, and a dual threat in the attack zone. Arizona might be getting one of the top defenders in the group a lot farther down than they imagined.
17 Nashville Dante Fabbro D Penticton (BCHL) 6' 0" 172
DraftSite's comments:He is a player, who in my opinion, is the most under-rated player in the first round. Saw a ton of ice-time, and effortless can skate in all the directions of the compass, so smooth, and skilled a passer, with an active stick in his own end. He definitely needs more time and to build his frame, strength and physicality, but he is the real deal.
18 Winnipeg Trade Icon Logan Stanley D Windsor (OHL) 6' 7" 225
DraftSite's comments:Congrats, Winnipeg! You just got a defender who is almost 6 foot 7 inches who can be intimidating eventually, but he still is a project in progress in terms of his pivots and agility.
19 NY Islanders Keiffer Bellows C Sioux Falls (USHL) 6' 0" 185
DraftSite's comments:Brian’s son inherited his wicked wrist shot and offensive instincts. He’s not a blazer, but has jump and willingness in every zone to make plays. He may not be a giant but he has a giant size backhand and forehand release.
20 Detroit Trade Icon Dennis Cholowski D Chilliwack (BCHL) 6' 0.25" 175
DraftSite's comments:Needs to get bigger and stronger but his offensive instincts and two-way game make him a perfect long term prospect for the Wings to develop.
21 Carolina Trade Icon Julien Gauthier RW Val-d'Or (QMJHL) 6' 3" 220
DraftSite's comments:Congratulations, Hurricanes! You just giant goal scoring winger who can score from anywhere in the attack zone, by playing big. Now, if you can develop him as a playmaker with better vision and IQ, you win the draft…
22 Philadelphia Trade Icon German Rubtsov C Vityaz Podolsk HC (Rus Jr) 6' 0.5" 190
DraftSite's comments: Two way centre-forward with a strong stride, high end puck skills and playmaking ability. Projects as a power wing and eventually a second line pivot.
23 Florida Henrik Borgström C HIFK Helsinki (SM-liiga) 6' 3" 176
DraftSite's comments:Looked gifted last year, but no one took him. He got bigger and the eyes opened. A wildcard pick that may surprise...
24 Anaheim Max Jones LW London (OHL) 6' 1.5" 180
DraftSite's comments:Brad’s son, who plays with high energy, has size & toughness and isn’t fun to play against.
25 Dallas Riley Tufte LW Fargo (USHL) 6' 4.75" 210
DraftSite's comments:This giant Minnesota high school wing was man-child against his opponents, with smooth moves, power stride, and domination. Size speed and stick-handling are there, and he will have to continue to build on his game and consistency and DZ coverage at the next level.
26 St. Louis Trade Icon Tage Thompson RW Connecticut 6' 4.75" 185
DraftSite's comments:Blues pick large 14 goal scoring college Freshmen who has a ways to go in developing his feet, his hockey sense and his 5 on 5 scoring. He scored 13 PP goals and was a liability in the DZ.
27 Tampa Bay Brett Howden LW Moose Jaw (WHL) 6' 1" 191
DraftSite's comments:Safe pick with an excellent 200 foot game and the ability to move up and down the lines and be successful.
28 Washington Trade Icon Lucas Johansen D Kelowna (WHL) 6' 2" 173
DraftSite's comments:Washington select Ryan's little brother, who is a steady puck mover with a patient game and lots of time to add to his game.
29 Boston Trade Icon Trent Frederic C US-Under-18 (USAH-NTDP) 6' 1" 195
DraftSite's comments:Big and aggressive, but little chance he scores in bushels. A long term meat & potatoes grinder.
30 Anaheim Trade Icon Sam Steel C Regina (WHL) 5' 11" 165
DraftSite's comments:One the year's most disappointing players gets redemption by way of the Ducks.
