Fierce 40 - Top 40 College Football Teams - Week 3

Ranking

Team

W-L

Result

Previous

1

Ohio State

2-0

W:Hawaii 38-0

1

Max Wittek came into this game with a hot hand for Hawaii...his line against the Buckeyes 7-24-67 2 INT's....yikes.

2

Alabama

2-0

W:Middle Tennessee State 37-10

2

Here comes Ole Miss, may be the best game on tap for this week.

3

TCU

2-0

W:Stephen F. Austin 70-7

3

627 yards and 30 first downs should put any offensive questions to rest for now.

4

Michigan State

2-0

W:#7 Oregon 31-28

4

Winning the game with Oregon could allow Michigan State to run the table and set up a huge game with Ohio State which now may be for more than just the Big Ten Title.

5

USC

2-0

W:Idaho 59-9

5

Through two games the offense is averaging 623 YPG and Cody Kessler has 8 TD passes.

6

Baylor

2-0

W:Lamar 66-31

7

It was 66 points and a win for Baylor but they turned the ball over four times against Lamar, not a comforting feeling.

7

Florida State

2-0

W:Central Florida 34-14

10

It's been a monster start for Dalvin Cook. Florida State should not look past a mid-week road contest against a scrappy Boston College team.

8

Ole Miss

2-0

W:Fresno State 73-21

14

73 points against Fresno State is not an easy thing to accomplish. Can Ole Miss take down Alabama for a second consecutive year?

9

Notre Dame

2-0

W:Virginia 34-27

11

The Irish are 2-0 but they have lost their starting running back and starting quarterback in successive weeks.

10

Georgia

2-0

W:Vanderbilt 31-14

12

Georgia gets off on the right foot in the SEC.

11

Clemson

2-0

W:Appalachian State 41-10

13

Starting to look like the team to beat in the ACC.

12

LSU

1-0

W:#23 Mississippi State 21-19

16

LSU gets that first win in conference, not having a warm up game against McNeese State did not become a factor.

13

Oregon

1-1

L:#4 Michigan State 28-31

7

Royce Freeman couldn't carry the Ducks to the win here.

14

Auburn

2-0

W:Jacksonville State 27-20 (OT)

8

Rarely will you see a team drop so far after a win. Then again most teams don't need overtime to beat an FCS school.

15

Arizona

2-0

W:Nevada 44-20

15

Anu Solomon completed passes to 10 different Wildcats in the win over Nevada.

16

UCLA

2-0

W:UNLV 37-3

17

Josh Rosen looked human in this game but losing Brett Hundley may still have been an upgrade for this offense.

17

Georgia Tech

2-0

W:Tulane 65-10

18

Yes, these were a couple of easier games but Georgia Tech has still outscored their opponenets 134-16 thus far.

18

Oklahoma

2-0

W:#33 Tennessee 31-24

19

We haven't used "Oklahoma" and "big win" in the same sentence for some time. It was a nice comeback but Tennessee lost that game as much as Oklahoma won it.

19

Texas A&M

2-0

W:Ball State 56-23

21

Kyle Allen has looked comfortable thus far running the Aggies offense.

20

Utah

2-0

W:Utah State 24-14

22

The Utes starting with a pair of wins against Michigan and Utah State should not be discounted. These were tougher opponennts then many are giving Utah credit for and they have yet to play their best football.

21

Wisconsin

1-1

W:Miami (Ohio) 58-0

24

Keep your head up Badger fans, Ohio State lost their opener last year and look where they ended up.

22

Northwestern

2-0

W:Eastern Illinois 41-0

26

Northwestern is winning by methodically moving the sticks and not turning the ball over. After two games Northwestern is +3 in turnovers and +18 minutes in Time of Possession.

23

Arkansas

1-1

L:Toledo 12-16

9

When you double your opponent in first downs, hold the ball 15 minutes longer and outgain them by nearly 200 yards you are supposed to win.

24

Virginia Tech

1-1

W:Furman 42-3

25

This is still one of the best defenses in the country, which made Ohio State's performance against them on the road even more impressive.

25

Missouri

2-0

W:Arkansas State 27-20

20

A very ho-hum performance as Missouri along with many in the SEC have looked sluggish thus far.

26

BYU

2-0

W:#38 Boise State 35-24

28

BYU is starting to turn into national darlings with Hail Mary's and dramatic wins. Although the Cougars are 2-0 it won't get any easier with back-to-back road games against UCLA and Michigan.

27

Mississippi State

1-1

L:#16 LSU 19-21

23

Opposing teams should take notes on how LSU kept Dak Prescott in the pocket and limited his running opportunities. Prescott had a decent day passing the ball but making him one-dimensional killed the offensive flow.

28

Nebraska

1-1

W:South Alabama 48-9

30

Good to see Nebraska rebound after their heartbreaking loss to BYU.

29

Temple

2-0

W:#31 Cincinnati 34-26

NR

A big win against Penn State and now handing Gunner Kiel and Cincinnati a loss, this is no fluke. We have been touting linebacker Tyler Matakevich since last season. Through two games so far, 20 tackles with 3 sacks and a pair of interceptions.

30

Florida

2-0

W:East Carolina 31-24

29

More SEC mediocrity from the weeekend.

31

West Virginia

2-0

W:Liberty 41-17

32

Quarterback Skyler Howard is raising some eyebrows in the Big 12 and beyond.

32

Oklahoma State

2-0

W:Central Arkansas 32-8

34

Oklahoma State is still shuffling their offensive line around but when Mason Rudolph has time to throw he delivers one of the best deep balls at the FBS level.

33

Duke

2-0

W: North Carolina Central 55-0

36

One of the biggest games on the schedule for week three is shaping up to be the Blue Devils hosting Northwestern. Not many people saw this game coming up as a marquee matchup.

34

NC State

2-0

W:Eastern Kentucky 35-0

39

Quarterback Jacoby Brissett is 38-45 through 2 games (84.4%).

35

Navy

1-0

Idle

37

Trying to stockpile wins before October opens with games against Air Force and Notre Dame.

36

Michigan

1-1

W:Oregon State 35-7

40

Typical Jim Harbaugh running attack is starting to take shape at Michigan.

37

Toledo

1-0

W:#9 Arkansas 16-12

NR

This was the most surprising result of the weekend. Arkansas totaled over 500 yards but Toledo stepped up in 3rd and 4th down situations as Arkansas went 6-16 in conversions.

38

Arizona State

1-1

W:Cal-Poly 35-21

34

This team is just misfiring, one of the low points from the Pac 12 early on.

39

Tennessee

1-1

L:#19 Oklahoma 24-31

33

It was a down week for the SEC but Tennessee had this game and just gave it away.

40

Kansas State

2-0

W: UTSA 30-3

NR

We aren't ready to declare Kansas State a big threat just yet but their "bend but don't break" defensive philosophy is working so far.

Dropped Out: Louisville, Cincinnati and Boise State.
