Fierce 40 - Top 40 College Football Teams - Week 4

Ranking

Team

W-L

Result

Previous

1

Ohio State

4-0

W:Western Michigan 38-12

1

The offense was balanced but giving up 168 yards rushing to Western Michigan has to be a concern.

2

Michigan State

4-0

W:Central Michigan 30-10

3

Michigan State does just enough to win and is efficient on offense and defense.

3

TCU

4-0

W:#37 Texas Tech 55-52

2

A miracle win for the Horned Frogs. Was this destiny or just pure luck, we had predicted a Texas Tech win...so close.

4

Ole Miss

4-0

W:Vanderbilt 27-16

4

Robert Nkemdiche is making his case to be the top overall pick in the 2016 draft if he declares. Through four games he has 15 tackles with 4.5 for loss with a sack and a blocked kick. Lets not forget 2 rushing touchdowns and a 31 yard touchdown reception.

5

LSU

3-0

W:Syracuse 34-24

5

Leonard Fournette is averaging...averaging 210 yards and 3 touchdowns a game thus far. That's insane. Fournette is doing this on a  team with a below average passing attack, defenses know what's coming, they just can't stop it.

6

Baylor

3-0

W:Rice 70-17

6

Seth Russell threw 16 passes and 6 went for touchdowns, that is the definition of efficiency.

7

Notre Dame

4-0

W:Massachusetts 62-27

8

A big second half sets up a big showdown on the road against Clemson next week.

8

Florida State

3-0

Idle

7

Florida State is already looking ahead to 10/10 against Miami.

9

Georgia

4-0

W:Southern 48-6

9

Marquee showdown of the week as the Bulldogs get ready to face the Crimson Tide.

10

Alabama

3-1

W:Louisiana-Monroe 34-0

10

See comment from #9 above.

11

Utah

4-0

W:#12 Oregon 62-20

18

The Utes have the attention of more than just the Pac 12 now.

12

Clemson

3-0

Idle

11

A win against Notre Dame would make Clemson the ACC front runner.

13

USC

3-1

W:#35 Arizona State 42-14

13

USC gets back in the win column as they easily handle the Sun Devils.

14

UCLA

4-0

W:#14 Arizona 56-30

15

UCLA keeps winning despite numerous injuries, especially on defense.

15

Texas A&M

4-0

W:Arkansas 28-21 (OT)

16

Arkansas had 8 more first downs and Texas A&M was an unimprssive 2/9 on third down conversions, the Aggies should be counting their blessings that they were victorious.

16

Oklahoma

3-0

Idle

17

A week off and they nearly had TCU take a conference loss, Oklahoma nearly came out huge winners without snapping the ball.

17

Wisconsin

3-1

W:Hawaii 28-0

20

Having to go 4-6 without Corey Clement at running back hasn't hurt the Badgers yet.

18

Northwestern

4-0

W:Ball State 24-19

21

This could be the most surprising 4-0 team in the land.

19

Mississippi State

3-1

W:#22 Auburn 17-9

24

Auburn is having some tough times but Mississippi State still scored a road win in the SEC which is never easy.

20

Florida

4-0

W:#36 Tennessee 28-27

25

This may have more to do with Tennessee blowing another win but again, a win is a win and Florida hasn't been 4-0 in quite some time.

21

Oklahoma State

4-0

W:Texas 30-27

26

A pair of fourth quarter field goals allow the Cowboys to escape with a win after turning the ball over three times.

22

Arizona

3-1

L:#15 UCLA 30-56

14

Arizona racks up over 350 yards rushing and still loses.

23

West Virginia

3-0

W:Maryland 45-6

30

The Mountaineers need to try and avoid a collapse down the stretch like they suffered a year ago.

24

NC State

4-0

W:South Alabama 63-13

31

The Wolfpack better not take an 0-3 Louisville team lightly this week, they are playing with their backs against the wall.

25

Michigan

3-1

W:#29 BYU 31-0

34

The only team that has given up less than the 38 points allowed by Michigan in the Big Ten is 35 by Northwestern.

26

Stanford

3-1

W:Oregon State 42-24

39

After the huge egg they laid against Northwestern, Stanford is averaging 38 PPG.

27

Duke

3-1

W:#19 Georgia Tech 34-20

38

You can always count on Duke for an upset or two every year. The Blue Devils are starting to become more than just a basketball school.

28

Oregon

2-2

L:#18 Utah 20-62

12

There are no words to accurately describe what happened to this Ducks squad. Saying they got destroyed by Utah is an understatement.

29

Temple

3-0

Idle

28

Charlotte, Tulane and UCF loom for Temple. This team could be 6-0 and one of the first to become bowl eligible.

30

Navy

3-0

W:Connecticut 28-18

33

Keenan Reynolds rushes for 3 more touchdowns. Five more rushing touchdowns will make Reynolds the all-time leader as he looks to pass Wisconsin alum Montee Ball.

31

Texas Tech

3-1

L:#2 TCU 52-55

37

Why wouldn't the Red Raiders move up six spots after a loss. Texas Tech was one crazy bounce away from finding themselves in the Top 25.

32

Miami

3-0

Idle

32

The Hurricanes are still looking for the right mix on defense but they are a deep, deep team.

33

Memphis

4-0

W: Cincinnati 53-46

NR

Paxton Lynch is going to be a name everyone remembers come draft day. 73.5% completion percentage with 8 touchdowns and 0 interceptions for a QB rating of 188. Did we mention he is 6'7" weighs 245 pounds and has running ability?

34

Cal

4-0

W:Washington 30-24

NR

Just let Jared Goff throw for a ton of yards and outscore your opponent by doing just enough on defense to win. It's a plan that is working for Cal so far.

35

Georgia Tech

2-2

L:#38 Duke 20-34

19

One of the seasons biggest disappointments up to this point.

36

Indiana

4-0

W:Wake Forest 31-24

NR

Nate Sudfeld is in the same category as Memphis signal caller Paxton Lynch. This would be why both teams are undefeated and making appearances in the Fierce 40.

37

Toledo

3-0

W:Arkansas State 37-7

NR

Here the stat you need for Toledo...total defense 71st in the nation while red zone defense is 2nd. Play defense when it matters and you win football games...that simple.

38

Kansas State

3-0 Idle

40

Oklahoma State, TCU and Oklahoma will be the next three games...things just got real for Kansas State.

39

Iowa

4-0

W:North Texas 62-16

NR

First 4-0 start for the Hawkeyes since 2009 and they are doing it under the radar.

40

Kentucky

3-1

W:#27 Missouri 21-13 NR

Kentucky won against the reeling Tigers by 8 points, largest margin of victory in any game this season.

Dropped Out: Auburn, Missouri, Virginia Tech, BYU, Arizona State and Tennessee.
