2016 Fierce 40: Final Standings

Fierce 40 - Top 40 College Football Teams - Final Standings

Clemson 14-1 W:#1 Alabama 35-31

99 offenisve plays and having to have the Alabama defense contend with Mike Williams seemed to be the big difference here. If Williams wasn't making plays himself it just opened things up for Crimson Tide killer Hunter Renfro.

Alabama 14-1 L:#3 Clemson 31-35 1

Alabama still had one of the finest defenisve seasons on record. The difference here was at quarterback. Jalen Hurts could not make the big throws on a consistent basis and was no match for the battle tested Deshaun Watson.

USC 10-3 W:#5 Penn State 52-49 Rose Bowl 9

USC may have been the best matchup for Alabama aside from Clemson.

Oklahoma 11-2 W:#17 Auburn 34-19 Sugar Bowl 7

Baker Mayfield will be coming back as this team looks like they will open in the top 5 next season.

Washington 12-2 L:#1 Alabama 7-24 4

Chris Peterson has the Huskies on top of the Pac-12 and it doesn't look like they will be going away any time soon.

Penn State 11-3 L:#9 USC 49-52 Rose Bowl 5

It's a shame somebody had to lose that Rose Bowl game, it's one college football fans will be talking about for the next 20 years.

Ohio State 11-2 L:#3 Clemson 0-31 2

We were expecting Clemson top come out on top but not with a shutout.

Wisconsin 11-3 W:#12 Western Michigan 24-16 Cotton Bowl 8

Wisconsin needs a program defining win next year to put themselves in the Michigan/Ohio State company of the Big Ten.

Oklahoma State 10-3 W:#10 Colorado 38-8 Alamo Bowl 11

The Cowboys get to start the 2017 with the quarterback/wide receiver combo of Mason Rudolph and James Washington returning for their senior seasons. With a consistent defense this team could be the team to beat in the Big 12 next year.

Florida State 10-3 W:#6 Michigan 33-32 Orange Bowl 16

Great to see the big game from Dalvin Cook as he declared for the NFL Draft following this victory.

11 Michigan 10-3 L:#16 Florida State 32-33 Orange Bowl 6

Coach Harbaugh has brought the fight back in the Wolverines.

Colorado 10-4 L:#11 Oklahoma State 8-38 Alamo Bowl 10

This team was picked as one of the Pac-12 doormats before the season began.

LSU 8-4 W:#14 Louisville 29-9 Citrus Bowl 12

LSU showed more balance offensively during the second half of the season and that balance showed against Louisville.

Florida 9-4 W:#30 Iowa 30-3 Outback Bowl 19

The Gators showed Iowa how dangerous they can be on the defensive side of the football.

Western Michigan 13-1 L:#8 Wisconsin 16-24 Cotton Bowl 12

A near flawless season for the Broncos. Wisconsin won comfortably but Western Michigan did show they belonged and were deserving of their BCS bid.

Stanford 10-3 W:#34 North Carolina 25-23 Sun Bowl                 25

Is Christian McCaffrey the best prospect on this team...the answer is no if you saw the utter destruction that defensive end Solomon Thomas laid on the Tar Heels.

South Florida 11-2 W:South Carolina 46-39 (OT) Birmingham Bowl 18

My early pick for team outside the Big 5 to land a BCS game for 2018.

Virginia Tech 10-4 W:Arkansas 35-24 Belk Bowl 21

The Hokies were down 24-0 at halftime before they staged the greatest comeback of the Bowl season.

Louisville 9-4 L:#13 LSU 9-29 Citrus Bowl 14

Lamar Jackson was unabale to get his teammates involved against LSU.

Utah 8-4 W:Indiana 26-24 Foster Farms Bowl 27

Joe Williams rattled off 222 yards on the ground for Utah in their Bowl victory.

Tennessee 9-4 W:#23 Nebraska 38-24 Music City Bowl 35

Quarterback Joshua Dobbs had some huge games down the strech for Tennessee.

San Diego State 11-3 W:#31 Houston 34-10 Las Vegas Bowl 37

11 wins and a Mountain West Crown qualifies as a big year for San Diego State.

West Virginia 10-3 L:#36 Miami 14-31 Russell Athletic Bowl 15

Committing 11 penalties against Miami was costly in their bowl loss and seemed to kill the Mountaineers on multiple occasions when trying to build momentum.

Auburn 8-5 L:#7 Oklahoma 19-35 Sugar Bowl 17

Auburn was one of the deepest teams in the SEC this season and it will serve them well in seasons to come.

BYU 9-4 W:#40 Wyoming 24-21 Poinsettia Bowl 33

BYU lost 4 games by a grand total of 8 points while sporting one of the most underrated defensive units in America.

Miami 9-4 W:#15 West Virginia 31-14 Russell Athletic Bowl 36

Brad Kaaya leaves his productive Hurricane career by going out on top.

Kansas State 9-4 W:#20 Texas A&M 33-28 Advocare V100 Texas Bowl 39

All four losses came against ranked teams as Kansas State quietly put together a solid season.

Georgia Tech 9-4 W:Kentucky 33-18 Taxslayer Bowl 38

The Yellow Jackets won 6 of their last 7 and scored at least 28 points in every win in that span.

Texas A&M 8-5 L:#39 Kansas State 28-33 Advocare V100 Texas Bowl 20

Another year where we saw an Aggie strong start followed by Aggie self destruction.

Nebraska 9-4 L:#35 Tennessee 24-38 Music City Bowl 23

The Owls gave up 31 unanswered points before halftime as the second half rally proved to be a little too late.

Temple 10-4 L:Wake Forest 26-34 Military Bowl 22

The Owls gave up 31 unanswered points before halftime as the second half rally proved to be a little too late.

Pittsburgh 8-5 L:Northwestern 24-31 Pinstripe Bowl 24

The Panthers managed wins over Clemson and Penn State this season showing they can play with anybody.

Western Kentucky 11-3 W:Memphis 51-31 Boca Rotan Bowl NR

That's three Bowl wins in a row for the Hilltoppers.

Boise State 10-3 L:Baylor Cactus Bowl 12-31 28

Wide receiver K.D. Cannon and Baylor tore the secondary up in an embarrasing performance.

Minnesota 9-4 W:#32 Washington State 17-12 NR

Controversy leading up to the Bowl game was all but forgotten as the Golden Gophers emerged victorious.

Tulsa 10-3 W:Central Michigan 55-10 Miami Beach Bowl NR

All three losses came against teams ranked at the time (Ohio State, Houston and Navy). The 55-10 drubbing of Central Michigan was one of the most dominating performances of the Bowl season.

Iowa 8-5 L:#19 Florida 3-30 Outback Bowl 30

The Hawkeyes managed a few big wins but looked totally flat against Florida in the Outback Bowl.

Troy 10-3 W:Ohio 28-23 Dollar General Bowl NR

Troy saw their win total rise by in the country.

Washington State 8-5 L:Minnesota 12-17 Holiday Bowl 32

The Cougars proved they can hang with the big boys and this program is on the rise despite a tough end to the campaign.

Houston 9-4 L:#37 San Diego State 10-34 Las Vegas Bowl 31

After defeating Oklahoma to start the year this looked like a promising campaign that would end with a BCS birth....that obviously never materialized.
