2016 Fierce 40: Week 1

Fierce 40 - Top 40 College Football Teams - Week 1

Alabama 1-0 W:#18 USC 52-6

It doesn't matter who quarterbacks Alabama, with a defensive front like the Crimson Tide consistently employ they will always be National Title contenders.

1-0 W:#39 Auburn 19-13 1

It was great for Clemson to get a strong win to start the season but they hardly looked like a #1 team.

Florida State

1-0 W:#5 Ole Miss 45-34 4

I don't know what Florida State said to their players at halftime (It couldn't have been Jimbo Fisher...he had no voice) Entering the 3rd quarter it was 28-13 Ole Miss. In the 3rd quarter Florida State ran 30 plays for 209 yards and scored 23 points while Ole Miss managed 0 points on 10 plays for -7 yards and committed a pair of turnovers.

Ohio State 1-0 W:Bowling Green 77-10 6

J.T. Barrett shakes off an early pick six to throw for six touchdowns while running for another.

Houston 1-0 W:#2 Oklahoma 33-23 11

Greg Ward Jr. is an NFL running back prospect playing quarterback for Houston but he threw for over 300 yards and his Heisman campaign begins. While Ward is impressive the real star here was the defense and the speed they showed against Oklahoma.

Michigan 1-0 W:Hawaii 63-3 10

17-20 passing the football while holding Hawaii to 2.2 YPC. This is a great recipie for a win and it could be the start of a big year for Michigan if they follow this blueprint.

Stanford 1-0 W:Kansas State 26-13 8

Christian McCaffrey finds the end zone twice for the Cardinal. Stanford wins despite being outgained by the Wildcats.

Wisconsin 1-0 W:#7 LSU 16-14 17

Corey Clement ran the ball with a chip on his shoulder. If Wisconsin can get Bart Houston to cut down on the interceptions then the Badgers may have something here.

Louisville 1-0 W:Charlotte 70-14 13

So we are hearing a lot about an ACC quarterback winning the Heisman. Could this be Lamar Jackson vice Deshaun Watson? Stranger things have happened.

Ole Miss 0-1 L:#4 Florida State 34-45 5

Ole Miss continued to go with the hurry up offense in the 3rd quarter when the team was clearly out of sync. Very curious decision now in hindsight. If Ole Miss had slowed things down and taken a step back we feel they could have still managed to win this game, they had Florida State right where they wanted them.

Oklahoma 0-1 L#11 Houston 23-33 2

It has been said coach Bob Stoops is known more for his losses at Oklahoma instead of his wins...chalk another one up in that category.

LSU 0-1 L:#17 Wisconsin 14-16 7

An ugly loss for the Tigers as this was supposed to be the coming out party for the new-and-improved Brandon Harris. Speaking of ugly, the late hit by Josh Boutte only draws a one game suspension, it should be longer than that.

Tennessee 1-0 W:#32 Appalachian State 20-13 (OT) 9

Tennessee should be 0-1 and that is clear to anyone who watched this game. There are so many reasons why they SHOULD have lost...but they didn't. Good teams carry on while great ones take the opportunity afforded them and run with it. Let's see if Tennessee is good or great.

Georgia 1-0 W:#16 North Carolina 33-24 31

Jacob Eason looked very comfortable under center and Nick Chubb looks like he has fully recovered from his devastating knee injury.

Oregon 1-0 W:UC-Davis 53-28 14

We will have to see how Oregons new defense fares against a tougher opponent. Oregon may have scored 53 points but they started slowly and it still looks like they are not firing on all cylinders quite yet.

Iowa 1-0 W:Miami (Ohio) 45-21 15

21 quick points against Miami (Ohio) put this game away early and now Iowa gets an Iowa State team that lost to Northern Iowa in week 1.

Baylor 1-0 W:Northwestern State 55-7 20

The offense clicked but it was the defense allowing under 100 yards of total offense stole the show.

Washington 1-0 W:Rutgers 48-13 30

Stanford looked less than impressive while UCLA and USC get blown out and Washington State and Arizona were ousted. Is Washington the team to beat this year in a watered-down Pac-12?

Miami 1-0 W:Florida A&M 70-3 22

Yes the opponent was Florida A&M, but having three running backs over 100 yards is still quite an accomplishment.

Michigan State 1-0 W:Furman 28-13 19

This was a lackluster game and the 120 yards in penalties is concerning for Michigan State.

Boise State 1-0 W:Louisiana-Lafayette 45-10 23

Business as usual for the Broncos and wide receiver Cedrick Wilson made an immediate impact, could be one of the better JUCO players making the leap this season.

Texas 1-0 W:#12 Notre Dame 50-47 (2OT) NR

We aren't ready to pronounce Texas is back just yet but we are happy for Charlie Strong, huge win for the Longhorns.

Texas A&M 1-0 W:#24 UCLA 31-24 (OT) 35

Texas A&M may have taken a step back from a few years ago but maybe this ends the ridiculous talk of coach Kevin Sumlin being in the hot seat.

Florida 1-0 W:UMass 24-7 25

This game was only 10-7 entering the 4th quarter.

Utah 1-0 W:Southern Utah 24-0 27

Utah defense starts by holding Southern Utah to 160 total yards and limited them to 2-12 on third down conversions.

TCU 1-0 W:South Dakota State 59-41 26

The defense was supposed to ease the loss of Trevone Boykin at quarterback but they looked shaky at best here.

North Carolina 0-1 L:#31 Georgia 24-33 16

North Carolina held a 24-14 lead in the 3rd quarter before Georgia scored the last 19 points unanswered.

Oklahoma State 1-0 W:Southeastern Louisiana 61-7 28

Fourteen different players caught a pass for Oklahoma State in their blowout victory.

Notre Dame 0-1 L:Texas 47-50 (2OT) 12

444 yards of total offense with 6 touchdowns to zero turnovers all while winning the battle of time of possession...and the Fighting Irish lose. The Fighting Irish may have lost a little more on defense then they realized last season.

Appalachian State 0-1 L:#9 Tennessee 13-20 (OT) 32

Appalachian State did everything they needed to do to win this football game on the road against an SEC school. A few key mistakes and some questionable clock management took a win away from a deserving club.

BYU 1-0 W:#21 Arizona 18-16 33

New head coach starts the year with a dramatic last second win, just the way 2015 started for the Cougars.

Auburn 0-1 L:#1 Clemson 13-19 39

The Tigers played Clemson tough and showed they will be a factor in the SEC race this season despite the loss.

USC 0-1 L:#3 Alabama 6-52 18

This game could not have gone any worse for USC. JuJu Smith-Schuster with 1 catch for 9 yards...absolute nightmare as USC has to turn things around quickly.

UCLA 0-1 L:#35 Texas A&M 24-31 (OT) 24

Josh Rosen cannot keep throwing big interceptions if UCLA wants to contend for the Pac-12 crown.

Arizona 0-1 L:#33 BYU 16-18 21

On the bright side, the defense looks to have improved from last season, then again it couldn't look any worse.

Western Michigan 1-0 W:#29 Northwestern 22-21 NR

Is this the team that makes noise for a BCS birth after this win? It's a very soft schedule for Western Michigan the rest of the way with the toughest game looking like a road contest with Illinois in a few weeks.

Nebraska 1-0 W:Fresno State 43-10 37

51 runs as compared to 13 passing plays, that's old school Nebraska football right there.

Minnesota 1-0 W:Oregon State 30-23 36

Quarterback Mitch Leidner gets it done with his feet in bringing the Golden Gophers back from a game they easily could have dropped.

Marshall 0-0 Idle 38

The only team in the Fierce 40 officially idle in week 1.

1-0 W:Colorado State 44-7 NR

The Buffaloes with a huge statement win, and one that flew under the radar with many of the big week 1 matchups.

Dropped Out: Northwestern, Cincinnati and Washington State.
