2016 Fierce 40: Week 3

Fierce 40 - Top 40 College Football Teams - Week 3

Alabama 3-0 W:#10 Ole Miss 48-43

Alabama is not worried that the defense had 43 hung on it. The Crimson Tide did something Saturday they haven't done in 3 years...beat Ole Miss.

Ohio State 3-0 w:#11 Oklahoma 45-24 3

The Ohio State defense has scored in every game of the campaign so far...that makes things much easier for the offense.

3-0 W:#2 Florida State 63-20 9

We said in Week 1 Lamar Jackson for Heisman campaign would gain steam.....those of you who sent me e-mail on the subject...ummmmmm...told ya so.

Michigan 3-0 W:#39 Colorado 45-28 5

Michigan off to a fast 3-0 starts and they have 3 weeks until they have to play away from Ann Arbor.

Clemson 3-0 W:South Carolina State 59-0 6

We will see if Clemson can shake off their sluggish start now that everybody is paying attention to Louisville.

Houston 3-0 W:Cincinnati 40-16 4

Houston was losing this game 16-12 heading to the 4th...don't just look at the final was closer than you think. The defense has turned more heads than the offense this season.

Stanford 2-0 W:#32 USC 27-10 8

It was reported that Christian McCaffrey had 107 yards rushing in this game before contact. If that doesn't scream offensive line domination I don't know what does.

Miami 3-0 W:#29 Appalachian State 45-10 18

Miami has stressed they want to be aggresive at the start of football games this year. So far three games in and the Hurricanes have outscored opponents 35-0 in the first quarter....mission accomplished.

Wisconsin 3-0 W:Georgia State 23-17 7

Wisconsin gets a sloppy win over a team they should have handled with ease and it looks like we have a quarterback debate in Madison.

Florida State 2-1 L:#9 Louisville 20-63 2

The last time Florida State allowed 63 points was.....err.....never.

Washington 3-0 W:Portland State 41-3 15

Stanford coming to town on September 30th is suddenly looking like a marquee matchup.

Michigan State 3-0 W:#26 Notre Dame 36-28 20

500 yards of total offense while holding the ball 16 minutes longer than Notre Dame goes a long way. Big win for the Spartans as they try to keep pace with Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan in the Big Ten.

Tennessee 3-0 W:Ohio 28-19 12

Tennessee has survived a few close games but they have yet to face a defense as tough as Florida...this will be a big game moving forward.

LSU 2-1 W:Mississippi State 23-20 13

Etling seems to be the best alternative behind center for LSU but the offense is far from showing the balance they have strived for.

Texas A&M 3-0 W:#30 Auburn 29-16 23

Coach Sumlin has went from golden boy to goat and now back to golden boy. It won't matter if the Aggies lose to Arkansas this in SEC have very short memories.

Baylor 3-0 W:Rice 38-10 17

Gets their first real test against Oklahoma State this weekend.

Ole Miss 1-2 L:#1 Alabama 43-48 10

Ole Miss is 1-2 with losses against Alabama and Florida State, they can still be a top 10 team, with a huge run in conference play.

Georgia 3-0 W:Missouri 28-27 19

Georgia sure believes in the concept of "doing just enough to win". The Bulldogs have won the last two weeks by a combined total of 3 points.

Florida 3-0 W:North Texas 32-0 24

Game at Tennessee this week could set the tone for the SEC East.

Utah 3-0 W:San Jose State 34-17 25

Will Utah get a desperate USC team or one that will be easy to kick while they are down.

Boise State 2-0 Idle 22

Another fast start for the Broncos but with a pair of other Mountain West schools ranked it won't be easy sledding for Boise State.

Nebraska 3-0 W:#16 Oregon 35-32 33

Nebraska has started hot and the next 4 opponents...Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana and Purdue. Is Nebraska this years version of Iowa?

Oklahoma 1-2 L:#3 Ohio State 24-45 11

All is not well in Sooner land. If Oklahoma doesn't win their next two against TCU and Texas you may start hearing Bob Stoops rumblings and a coaching heard it here first.

Arkansas 3-0 W:Texas State 42-3 28

Arkansas has just been steady in the SEC in what seems like an overall down year for the conference.

Iowa 2-1 L:North Dakota State 21-23 14

Yes, North Dakota State is not your typical FCS school but this is still a game Iowa expected to win.

North Carolina 2-1 W:James Madison 56-28 27

North Carolina wins their home opener but they have to find a way to plug up their run defense which is near the bottom of the national rankings.

San Diego State 3-0 W Northern Illinois42-28 31

San Diego State is perfect and they don't have to face Boise State in the regular season. This has become a team we have to start paying attention to.

UCLA 2-1 W:#35 BYU 17-14 34

The Pac-12 isn't all about offense...against BYU the Cougars had 25 carries for 23 yards...that's why the Bruins won the game.

Texas 2-1 L:Cal 43-50 21

Bad way for Texas to lose against Cal on the fumble/no fumble call but  the Texas defense should have never allowed Cal the opportunities they did.

Oregon 2-1 L:#33 Nebraska 32-35 16

The loss of Royce Freeman was crippling for the Ducks, Oregon faithful are holding their collective breath waiting for an injury update on the star running back.

Western Michigan 3-0 W:Illinois 34-10 36

The November 25th game with Toledo could be huge with both teams now ranked and off to 3-0 starts. The Broncos pass another big test easily disposing of Illinois.

Army 3-0 W:UTEP 66-14 NR

Where were you the last time Army was ranked? The annual Army-Navy game might be intersting this season. The service academies are off to a combined 7-0 start.

Oklahoma State 2-1 W:Pittsburgh 45-38 40

Nice bounce back victory over a quality Pittsburgh club after the debacle last week against Central Michigan.

Toledo 3-0 W:Fresno State 52-17 NR

This is a well balanced team that is once again "flying" under the radar (pardon the pun.

Cal 2-1 W:#21 Texas 50-43 NR

Cal and Arizona State this week.....we could see 140 points total in this game....I'm not kidding.

Notre Dame 1-2 L:#20 Michigan State 28-36 26

We've talked repeatedly about the defense or the lack thereof for the Irish. Not even the firepower they possess on offense can bail them out every week.

Minnesota 2-0 Idle 38

A team with more questions than answers right now, hopefully the week off helped the Golden Gophers answer some the lingering concerns.

Air Force 2-0 Idle NR

A road game with Utah State before welcoming Navy to town.

West Virginia 2-0 Idle NR

Still a lot of questions about this West Virginia squad as they face a tested and desperate BYU club this week.

Arizona State 3-0 W:UTSA 32-28 NR

See writeup for #35.

Dropped Out: Appalachian State, Auburn, USC, BYU, Marshall and Colorado.
