2016 Fierce 40: Week 5

Fierce 40 - Top 40 College Football Teams - Week 5

Alabama 5-0 W:Kentucky 34-6

Game with Arkansas will not be a cakewalk as the Razorbacks have played Alabama tough over the last few seasons. Alabama does not want to overlook Arkansas as Tennessee and Texas A&M will follow during a tough three game stretch.

Ohio State 4-0 W:Rutgers 58-0 2

This defense was not supposed to look this good this soon.

5-0 W:#3 Louisville 42-36 5

Tigers prevail in what was the best game of the season thus far with their hard-fought win over Louisville.

Michigan 5-0 W:#7 Wisconsin 14-7 4

The loss of left tackle Grant Newsome could be catastrophic for Michigan. Michigan should have buried Wisconsin earlier in their game but let the Badgers hang around.

Washington 5-0 W:#8 Stanford 44-6 12

Saying this was a dominant performance and a statement win against Stanford is an understatement.

Houston 5-0 W:Connecticut 42-14 6

Suddenly the Cougars home date with Louisville in November becomes a must-see game.

Louisville 4-1 L:#5 Clemson 36-42 3

Can't drop the Cardinals too far after the loss to Clemson as they came up three yards short.

Miami 4-0 W:Georgia Tech 35-21 9

Tricky game this week against Florida State. Do the Hurricanes have this team when they are down or are they walking into a trap against a desperate squad?

Texas A&M 5-0 W:South Carolina 24-13 13

Game against Tennessee this week could be the best on the schedule.

Tennessee 5-0 W:#31 Georgia 34-31 11

If I were on the Tennessee coaching staff I would consider buying a lottery ticket. This team is 5-0 but could just as easily be 2-3. Tennessee seems to be catching all the breaks but they have the talent and it makes them a dangerous team moving forward.

Wisconsin 4-1 L:#4 Michigan 7-14 7

Tough defensive play with too many turnovers coming from the quarterback position, stop me if you've heard this one before.

Nebraska 5-0 W:Illinois 31-16 17

The Cornhuskers were rewarded for sticking with the running game. We continue to claim this team is just like Iowa a season ago, they are going to sneak up on everyone and remain unbeaten for a long time.

Ole Miss 3-2 W:#40 Memphis 48-28 15

Ole Miss gets a week off as the prep for the heart of their SEC schedule.

Baylor 5-0 W:Iowa State 45-42 14

Furious comeback against Iowa State leaves us scratching our heads over this mysterious and inconsistent Baylor squad.

Boise State 4-0 W:Utah State 21-10 18

Boise State and Air Force are set to meet in the final week of the regular season, this could shape up to a huge game.

North Carolina 4-1 W:#10 Florida State 37-35 23

They are 2-0 in conference play winning by a combined total of 3 points. Can North Carolina replicate last years feat where they lose their opener and then go on a tear?

Stanford 3-1 L:#12 Washington 6-44 8

The Cardinal offensive line was really exposed against the Huskies. Everyone knew this was not the same Cardinal offensive line but the flaws were not thought to be so extensive.

Oklahoma 2-2 W:#38 TCU 52-46 19

It's Red River week. Oklahoma can't afford another loss as they look to avenge last years beating.

Florida 4-1 W:Vanderbilt 13-6 29

Take away the Tennessee game and the Gator defense has yet to surrender 10 points in a game.

Western Michigan 5-0 W:Central Michigan 49-10 24

Corey Davis became the MAC's all-time leading receiver and is showing why we have him ranked as the top senior wide receiver in the country.

Colorado 4-1 W:Oregon State 47-6 35

Don't ajust your sets at home...that is Colorado at the top of the Pac-12 South Standings.

Air Force 4-0 W:#39 Navy 28-14 32

Weston Steelhammer continues to show why he is a legitimate 2017 Draft prospect with a pair of interceptions for the undefeated Falcons.

Florida State 3-2 L:#23 North Carolina 35-37 10

Florida State has to stop falling behind early in games, this goes back to the days of Jameis Winston and is fast becomeing their M.O. When the Tar Heels drilled that 54-yarder to beat the Seminoles it was the quietest we have heard that stadium in a long, long time.

LSU 3-2 W:Missouri 42-7 28

LSU opened up the offense this week and the results were big. The Tigers are far from dead in the SEC.

West Virginia 4-0 W:Kansas State 17-16 34

This is the last week off for the Mountaineers. This team has to get better in the red zone to contend.

Arkansas 4-1 W:Alcorn State 52-10 33

The Razorbacks get Alabama and Ole Miss at home in consecutive weeks in an attempt to prove they are legitimate SEC contenders.

Virginia Tech 3-1 Idle 36

Virginia Tech has won all three home games and lost to Tennessee in their neutral game at Bristol speedway. This week the Hokies travel to play the Tar Heels and we will see how good this team is away from Blacksburg.

Utah 4-1 L:Cal 23-28 16

Utah has been flirting with disaster the last few weeks. The Utes are still good enough on defense to win the Pac-12 South.

Georgia 3-2 L:#11 Tennessee 31-34 31

Georgia was just seconds away from their first statement win of the Kirby Smart era. Now Georgia will be fighting to keep their head above water.

Oklahoma State 3-2 W:#25 Texas 49-31 NR

Saturday was a reminder of just how good Mason Rudolph can be.

Maryland 4-0 W:Purdue 50-7 NR

Has anybody noticed the Terrapin offense is averaging 43 PPG behind a running attack averaging exactly 300 yards per contest good for 7th in the country?

UCLA 3-2 W:Arizona 45-24 37

Josh Rosen played up to his promise this past weekend. More performances like this will ensure the Bruins are in the thick of the Pac-12 race.

North Dakota State 4-0 W:Illinois State 31-10 NR

6-0 in their last 6 games against Division I-A opponents and 5 straight National Titles. Ranking North Dakota State is long overdue.

Michigan State 3-2 L:Indiana 21-24 22

11 more penalties called against the Spartans in their shocking upset at the hands of Indiana. The Sprtans are one of the most penalized teams at the FBS level and they need to right the ship fast.

Minnesota 3-1 L:Penn State 26-29 (OT) 27

Tough loss against Penn State as the Golden Gophers had 12 more first downs and held the ball for 14 more minutes than the Nittany Lions but still lost in overtime.

Texas 2-2 L:Oklahoma State 31-49 25

Just a month ago everyone thought the victory over Notre Dame would save Charlie Strong. If Texas loses this week and stands at 2-3 the whispers will start turning into shouts for a change to be made.

Iowa 3-2 L:Northwestern 31-38 20

A pair of losses with Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska still on the schedule, not what the Hawkeyes envisioned coming into the season.

San Diego State 3-1 L:South Alabama 24-42 21

Everyone knew the winning streak for San Diego State would eventually end. South Alabama was not the team that we thought would be the ones to hand them an "L".

Auburn 3-2 W:Louisiana-Monroe 58-7 NR

Auburn may have a pair of losses but both were against top 10 teams (Clemson and Texas A&M).

South Florida 4-1 W:Cincinnati 45-20 NR

Only loss on the season came against Florida State and they hung 35 on the Seminoles.

Dropped Out: Arizona State,Toledo, TCU, Navy and Memphis.
