Fierce 40 - Top 40 College Football Teams -Week 3

Ranking

Team

Result

1

Alabama 3-0 W:Colorado State 41-23

1

If Alabama can get Jalen Hurts to turn in more performances like that they are virtually guarenteed a return to the College Football Playoff.

2

Oklahoma 3-0 W:Tulane 56-14 2

Some tough sledding at the start but Oklahoma settled in and put a whopping on Tulane with 49 unanswered points.

3

Clemson 3-0 W:#11 Louisville 47-21 5

So much for quarterback Kelly Bryant being the weak link here as this game did not live up to the billing. The defense for Cl;emson was stellar once again with four more sacks.

4

Penn State 3-0 W:Georgia State 56-0 3

Three more weeks of very winnable games before Michigan. Penn State did not turn the ball over while receiving five Georgia State turnovers...that always helps.

5

Washington 3-0 W:Fresno State 48-16 6

Dante Pettis has a punt return for touchdown in every game this season and has now tied the NCAA career mark with eight total.

6

USC 3-0 W:Texas 27-24 2OT 3

Will the real Sam Darnold please stand up? Yes this was a close game but USC sure helped Texas by blowing opportunities and missing some throws that should have been made.

7

Oklahoma State 3-0 W:Pittsburgh 59-21 8

Oklahoma State makes it looks so easy. The Cowboys were one of only two teams last season to have a 3,000 yard passer (Randolph), 1,000 yard rusher and receiver (Hill and Washington) and all three are back this year. The other team lost all  three.....but Clemson won the National title with them...makes you wonder.

8

Wisconsin 3-0 W:BYU 40-6 7

Alex Hornibrook is making tremendous strides this season, this team could walk away Big Ten Champions this year.

9

Ohio State 2-1 W:Army 38-7 9

J.K. Dobbins is looking like the real deal and next great Ohio State back.

10

Michigan 3-0 W:Air Force 29-13 10

Not many Wolverine games do you say the star is the kicker, but that was the case again

11

Georgia

3-0 W:Samford 42-14 13

Business as usual after the thriller against Notre Dame last weekend.

12

Florida State 0-1 Idle 12

The Seminoles still do not have a win...thanks Mother Nature.

13

TCU 3-0 W:SMU 56-36 18

This TCU offense is clicking on all cylinders and they have a stable of running backs that can hurt you in a myriad of different ways.

14

Auburn 2-1 W:Mercer 14

Auburn finishes -5 in turnover ratio and has trouble with Mercer....ouch.

15

Miami 1-0 Idle 16

Miami and Florida State want to play so badly.

16

South Florida 3-0 W:Illinois 47-23 19

It still feels like this is the team that gets the BCS birth outside the Power 5.

17

Mississippi State 3-0 W:#15 LSU 37-7 NR

I admired the poise the Bulldogs showed after they destroyed LSU, they acted like it was expected and were so calm and collected. This was just a WOW game.

18

Oregon 3-0 W:Wyoming 22

Oregon is showing tremenous offensive balance and Josh Allen was hounded all night as Oregon made him look awful.

19

Louisville 2-1 L:#5 Clemson 21-47 11

Lamar Jackson could not duplicate his early season success but he wasn't awful. Jackson may not be the Heisman front-runner any longer but he is not out of the compitition.

20

Colorado 3-0 W:Northern Colorado 41-21 20

Colorado remains the forgotten team of the Pac-12, something they could use to their advantage down the road.

21

Virginia Tech 3-0 W:East Carolina 64-17 24

Speaking of forgotten teams in the conference, the ACC is on notice as the Hokies are a title contender.

22

Memphis 3-0 W:#29 UCLA 48-45 35

This is why it's good to have a Fierce 40. We had memphis as a ranked team as many displayed utter shock they defeated UCLA> We were a little surprised but not shocked. Memphis quarterback Riley Ferguson might get drafted this year on the strength of this game alone.

23

Maryland 2-0 Idle 23

With the strong showing by Texas against USC it makes the Terps openeing weekend victory in Austin look more impressive.

24

Florida 1-1 W:#21 Tennessee 26-20 31

The SEC sure has a flair for the dramatic with their finishes don't they?

25

Washington State 3-0 W:Oregon State 52-23 25

Luke Falk responds nicely after sitting against Boise State.

26

Tennessee 2-1 L:#31 Florida 20-26 21

Losing on a last second bomb is bad, missing three fields goals (albeit none were chip shots) makes it sting even more.

27

San Diego State 3-0 W:#17 Stanford 20-17 NR

Running back Rashaad penny and tight end David Wells both came up big for San Diego State...and why both could be drafted this coming April.

28

West Virginia 2-1 W:Delaware State 59-16 27

West Virginia was beat in time of possession and committed three turnovers so this p[erformance was far from perfect.

29

Notre Dame 2-1 W:Boston College 49-20 30

Rushing attack was good for 7 touchdowns and 515 yards....impressive.

30

Boise State 2-1 W:New Mexico 28-14 28

Efficient win but this team is not the same without Brett Rypien under center.

31

LSU 2-1 L:Mississippi State 7-37 15

That was a straight up beatdown.

32

Arkansas 1-1 Idle 32

Things already looking topsy-turvy in the SEC..can the Razorbacks take advantage?

33

Georgia Tech 1-1 W:Central Florida 33

Game cancelled due to storms.

34

Utah 3-0 W:San Jose State 54-16 36

Is wide rfeceiver Darren Carrington relevant again? After posting a 9-153-3 line we think so.

35

Duke 3-0 W:Baylor 34-20 37

Nearly 39 minutes in TOI and Duke held baylor to 9 first downs while putting up 24. Makes you wonder why Duke needed 10 points in the 4th quarter to pull away.

36

Minnesota 3-0 W:Middle Tennessee State 34-3 NR

P.J. Fleck has the Gophers playing mistake-free football.

37

UCLA 2-1 L:#35 Memphis 45-48 29

The Bruins showed some heart here as they kept trying to surpass memphis but the defense is a huge concern.

38

Iowa 3-0 W:North Texas 31-14 38

This game was closer than the score indicates, Iowa pulled away late in what was a very tight game.

39

Stanford 1-2 L:San Diego State 17-20 17

Stanford had two early season losses last year and came storming back, don't write them off just yet.

40

Navy 2-0 Idle 40

Cincinnati awaits the Midshipmen.

Dropped Out: Kansas State, South Carolina and Ole Miss.
