2020 NFL Draft: Mike's 1st edition Mock Draft Alternative

Introduction: The 2020 NFL 2020 draft a little over a month away with free agency just around the corner. This year’s draft has arguably the best overall talent we’ve seen in a very long time with the wide receiver and offensive tackle positions projected to have the most selected in the 1st round. As reported, we could see a trade or possibly two in the top 5 as teams will be looking to trade up for an elite quarterback. In my 1st edition mock draft, I will include trades that have already occurred and projected trades: Here is my 1st edition of the 2020 NFL mock draft:

  1. Cincinnati: Joe Burrow (QB):This has been the pick for the past two months or longer and unless Burrow decides to pull either a John Elway or Eli Manning, this is the pick.
  2. Washington: Chase Young (DE): This has been the pick ever since the Giants beat the Redskins in the second to last game of the season.
  3. Detroit: Isaiah Simmons (OLB): Lions could go with Okudah here as well, but in this mock draft, Simmons is the pick.
  4. Trade****** Los Angeles: Tua Tagovailoa (QB): The Chargers have moved on from Rivers and now leap frog over the Dolphins to select Tua Tagovailoa as his health concerns are no longer an issue.
  5. Miami: Justin Herbert (QB): The Dolphins settle on Herbert who will have the luxury of sitting behind Fitzpatrick and learn and develop at a comfortable pace.
  6. Trade******New York Giants: Tristan Wirfs (OT): Giants for the first time under GM Dave Gettleman trade back in the 1st and still get the OT they wanted.
  7. Carolina: Derrick Brown (DT):  The Panthers are in full rebuild and adding Brown to solidify the defensive line is a good start.
  8. Arizona: Jedrick Wills: The Cardinals just acquired WR De’Andre Hopkins from the Texans and now they need to protect last year’s 1st overall pick Kyler Murray and Wills fits the bill.
  9. Jackonsville: Jeffrey Okudah (CB): The Jaguars traded away Jalen Ramsey last season and then traded away their other corner, A.J Bouye. Okudah will instantly fill in at one of the corner spots in 2020.
  10.  Cleveland: Andrew Thomas (OT): Browns need to improve the offensive tackle position and decide on Thomas over Becton, based on overall body of work.
  11. New York Jets: Mekhi Becton (OT): Jets are happy that Becton was available to anchor him at LT for the next decade.
  12. Las Vegas: CeeDcc Lamb (WR): Lamb becomes the 1st wide receiver taken off the board over Jeudy.
  13. Trade*******San Francisco: The 49ers traded defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts. Xavier McKinney (CB): The 49ers secondary (particularly Richard Sherman) were exposed in the Super Bowl. McKinney will be groomed to replace him.
  14. Tampa Bay: A.J Epenesa (DE): The Bucs bring in QB Tom Brady to ignite the offense and now plug in a dominant edge rusher in Epenesa.
  15. Denver: Jerry Jeudy (WR): The Broncos need playmakers on offense and Jeudy fits the bill.
  16. Atlanta: A.J Epenesa (DE): Atlanta could go with a linebacker here as well, but decide on Epenesa for much needed edge help.
  17. Dallas: C. J Henderson (CB): the Cowboys let Bryon Jones walk and now they need to replace him. Henderson is a solid corner and will give the Cowboys a starter from day one.
  18. Miami:Josh Jones (OT): Miami gets their future quarterback with the 1st of three picks in the 1st round, now they need to build up the offensive line to protect him.
  19. Las Vegas:Kenneth Murray (ILB/OLB): The Raiders and Murray seem like the perfect fit and with their 19th pick, the Raiders make sure Murray’s the pick.
  20. Jacksonville: Tee Higgins (WR): There’s still a few talented wide receivers available for the Jaguars and they decide on Higgins Kristian Fulton (CB): The Jaguars traded away Jalen Ramsey last season and then traded away their other corner, A.J Bouye. Fulton will instantly fill in at one of the corner spots in 2020.
  21. Philadelphia: Kristian Fulton (CB): The Eagles could go WR here, but with Fulton still on the board; he’s the pick and will instantly fill in at one of the corner spots in 2020.
  22. Trade*****Minnesota: Henry Ruggs III (WR): Vikings trade WR Stefon Diggs to the Buffalo Bills and now look to replace him with Ruggs III.
  23. New England:K’Lavon Chaisson (Edge): The Patriots Van Noys to the Dolphins in free agency and Collins could be next. Chaisson has catapulted himself into the 1st round with his performance in the 2nd half of the season and a solid combine.
  24. New Orleans:Justin Jefferson (WR): Drew Brees has another weapon to add to the Saints arsenal. Jefferson will be a solid addition to the Saints offensive attack.
  25. Minnesota:Trevon Diggs (CB): The Vikings found Trevon’s brother replacement a few picks earlier and now select the talented corner to improve the secondary.
  26. Miami:Yetur Gross-Matos (Edge): Miami’s final 1st round pick is to add some defensive help with a solid edge rusher out of Penn State.
  27. Seattle:Curtis Weaver (DE): The Seahawks were hoping that Gross-Matos was available as they could be losing Clowney to free agency. However; Weaver is not a bad consolation prize.
  28. Baltimore:Grant Delpit (S): Delpit is going to fit in very well in the Ravens defensive scheme.
  29. Tennessee:Patrick Queen (ILB/OLB): The Titans defense was solid in 2019, now with the addition of Queen, they’re even more potent to score against.
  30. Green Bay:Denzel Mims (WR): Aaron Rodgers wanted another offensive weapon in 2019, but now he has one in Mims in 2020.
  31. San Francisco: Javon Kinlaw (DT): The 49ers traded pro bowler DeForest Buckner and now find his replacement with a dominant interior defensive linemen in Kinlaw.
  32. Kansas City:D’Andre Swift (RB): The Chiefs could go DL here as they could lose Chris Jones to free agency. However; they could also use an upgrade at running back and Swift would be hard to pass up at this point.

Final Thoughts: As I mentioned in my introduction, trades were include, although I believe we are going to see more than projected in my 1st mock draft. Free agency will play a large part on what the teams will do in the draft and In my final mock draft, I will make the adjustments and also attempt to project more trades as I see fit; which could shake up the 1st round of the 2020 NFL draft.
