NHL Trading Deadline Part 3: Who will Be Buyers or Sellers?

Introduction: Part three of my NHL buyers or sellers takes us to the western conference and to the central division where the defending champs (St. Louis Blues) reside. Currently; not one team in the division has a losing record with the Blues holding a one point lead over the Colorado Avalanche.  Let’s take a look at which teams could be buyers or sellers.

Western Conference

Central Division:

  • St. Louis Blues:
  1. Brayden Schenn: The Blues will be facing a tight salary cap in the off season, so expect them to move on of their defensemen to clear some space as they will have to re-sign defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. Schenn seems like the odd man out here and the Blues could seek in return a young forward and/or draft picks. Possible Destinations: Tampa Bay Lightning or Montreal Canadiens.
  • Nashville Predators:
  1. Kyle Turris: Turris has four years remaining on his contract, so if the Predators plan on moving him; they would need to be creative and possibly retain a portion of Turris salary to make a deal possible. There could be some interest from teams in need of offensive production. Possible Destinations: Carolina Hurricanes or Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • Colorado Avalanche:
  1. Martin Kaut: Kaut has been rumored to being part of a package; which could include Drew Helleson, 2020 1st round pick and a 2021 pick (conditional) for Taylor Hall. The hold up on this trade could be on the Devils side as they seem to have interest in Timmins in place of Helleson. Many following these teams believe that both sides want to make a deal, but the Devils could have other teams offering more for Hall.  Possible Destinations: New Jersey Devils or Carolina Hurricanes
  • Winnipeg Jets:
  1. Patrik Lane: Patrik Lane for Taylor Hall is becoming more than a rumor as we head into the new year. Lane is currently an RFA and has beenlooking for a new deal from the Jets, who are still undecided if they want to commit Lane to a long term contract. Need to keep an eye on this one as it heat up sooner than later. Possible Destinations: New Jersey Devils or Winnipeg Jets.
  • Dallas Stars:
  1. Julius Honka: Honka is a RFA and is currently playing in Finland and seeking a trade. Reports indicate the Stars seeking draft picks for Honka and there have been a few teams showing interest. Possible Destinations: Montreal Canadiens or Winnipeg Jets.
  • Chicago Blackhawks:
  1. Dylan Strome: Strome could be a possible trade candidate by the deadline as the Blackhawks are looking to trim their payroll. Strome is averaging nearly a point per game and if he continues to produce by the deadline; the Blackhawks could receive a nice package for him; preferably a young prospects and/or draft picks. Possible Destinations: Pittsburgh Penguins or Nashville Predators.
  • Minnesota Wild:
  1. Jared Spurgeon: Reports out of Minnesota has the Wild leaning more towards trading Jared Spurgeon rather than giving him an extension. The mobile defenseman should have a lot of interest by other teams if the Wild make him available. Possible Destinations: Los Angeles Kings or Montreal Canadiens.

Final Thoughts: Starting to hear a lot more rumors as we move forward into the season. Teams are starting to make their moves to improve their teams as quick as possible. We should see some players moving over the next few weeks. Next article: The Pacific Division of the Western Conference.
