College Football Rankings needs an adjustment

Introduction: At the time of this article being published (October 13, 2019) the current top 10 in college football appears set for now, but there’s a few  team’s that received favorable votes/consideration in the top 10 that seems a little off. Below you’ll find polls from last week, this week and what I believe the top 10 ranking should be. Also, I’ll target one team in particular that shouldn’t be in the top 5 ranking.

This Week                            Last Week                            Should Be

  1. Alabama (6-0)                   Alabama                              Alabama
  2. Clemson (6-0)                    Clemson                               Clemson
  3. Ohio State (6-0)                Georgia                                Ohio State
  4. Georgia (5-1)                      Ohio State                            LSU
  5. LSU (6-0)                             LSU                                        Oklahoma
  6. Oklahoma (6-0)                Oklahoma                            Wisconsin
  7. Florida (6-1)                       Auburn                                 Penn State
  8. Wisconsin (6-0)                Wisconsin                           Georgia
  9. Notre Dame (5-1)               Notre Dame                         Notre Dame
  10. Penn State (6-0)                Florida                                 Florida

Why is Georgia still in the top 5? There’s no argument that the Georgia Bulldogs at an elite college football team and have an abundance of talent on both sides of the ball. However; their stunning upset to the hands of unranked South Carolina Gamecocks 20-17 in overtime should have moved them from their 3rd place ranked prior to the game to 8th place in the polls. Here are four teams that were behind Georgia before this week in the polls and won convincingly and should have moved up ahead of Georgia.

  • LSU: The Tigers took care of business by beating #7 ranked Florida Gators 42-28.
  • Oklahoma: The Sooners played a very tough opponent in the Texas Longhorns and came away with a win 34-27.
  • Wisconsin:  The Badgers dismantled the Michigan State Spartans easily 38-0 in a division conference matchup.
  • Penn State: The Nittany Lions edged out a gritty Iowa Hawkeyes 17-12 to remain undefeated.

Final Thoughts: When you lose to a team that’s not even ranked in the top 25 and four teams behind you played and beat a top 25 team, there should be no way that team remains in the top 5, only moving one spot back in the process. I understand that the rankings are determined by a randomly selected panel of head coaches at the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) schools. Every week, panel members submit their recommendations for the top 25 teams in the college football. However; this mishap should be a black eye for college football and Georgia should have been moved back at least 4 spots at #8.
