Draft Preview: The good news is re-signing John Tavares along with having a fairly early pair of selections in an area of the first round where there are still safe, eventual NHL players. The bad news will be if Tavares leaves them with four picks in the top 43 to fill the hole left with his departure. There will be nice long term developmental options in that early second, and unless one of the other teams with multiple picks selects him first, why not consider Ryan Merkley as he makes his drop? And as much as I see Ty Smith as defender that talent and upside, I see no reason why they could go two centres in the first with Joe Veleno, and Hayton. Both, right now, don't carry the high top line recommendations placed on the prospects ahead of them, as they are not seen as players you can project as first line centres, but both are going to be NHLers even if their high water marks might fall to second line centre or top six forward. Some longer term defenseman with size and feet are on the board as are other solid forward options
