New York Islanders 2001 nhl DRAFT PICKS

New York Islanders

Draft Year:

Team Needs: C, C, D, RW, LW, D

The Islanders should be whole heartedly congratulated on the their playoff run, due to great coaching and performances by what for all intents and purposes is a "home grown" bunch. The majority of their roster was built through shrewd moves and development of draft picks. They have about a half dozen quality prospects growing in the AHL and elsewhere, and now is a good time to find and develop some more. As much as patience may wearing thin about winger Kieffer Bellows ability to generate offensive along being the shooter who always takes the shot. They will continuing investing in his ascension. Former USHDT goal scorer winger Oliver Wahlstrom has yet show the dominant on-demand scoring that he displayed in junior while playing with Jack Hughes & Joel Farabee. He hasn't been able to maintain pace, and still hasn't rounded out his 200 foot game. RW Simon Holmstrom is getting quicker and stronger and will at very least find a role in the bottom six. On defense, the gem is Noah Dobson, who was brought along slowly but now being eased into the parent club's dee this past playoff. He has size, smarts, skill, and a responsible two-way game and is still a teenager. They also have high hopes for big physical Bode Wilde, a terrific skater with a booming shot whose been working at reigning back his instincts to over-carry the puck and try to be a one man offense. Part of making sure Semyon Varlamov was resigned was that they are counting on him tutoring Moscow Army draftee Ilya Sorokin as the goalie of the future. The Islanders are woefully thin of developing centres that project to play in the top two slots in future years. Unfortunately, they don't have a choice until the late third round to start the search, and a dozen and a half will have already heard their names called. --Bill Placzek--
